What BPC-157 Is

BPC-157 is a pentadecapeptide — a chain of 15 amino acids — derived from a naturally occurring protective protein found in human gastric juice. It was first isolated and characterized in the 1990s by Croatian researcher Predrag Sikiric and colleagues, whose lab has since produced the majority of the compound's published research base. Unlike single-target peptides, BPC-157 appears in the literature as acting through multiple overlapping biological mechanisms rather than one dominant pathway.

What the Research Shows

The largest and most consistent body of BPC-157 research concerns the gastrointestinal tract — its tissue of origin. Rodent studies report protective effects against a range of experimentally induced gastrointestinal lesions, along with accelerated healing of the gut lining.

A separate, well-documented area of research covers tendon and ligament healing. Studies using transected rat Achilles tendon models report that BPC-157 accelerates tendon fibroblast outgrowth, migration, and survival under oxidative stress, mediated in part through activation of the FAK-paxillin signaling pathway. Related research has identified upregulation of growth hormone receptor expression in tendon fibroblasts as a possible contributing mechanism, along with increased VEGFR2 expression supporting new blood vessel formation at injury sites. Similar healing effects have been reported in studies of the quadriceps tendon-muscle junction, rotator cuff, and other ligament and myotendinous injury models.

Beyond gut and musculoskeletal research, BPC-157 has also been studied in models of muscle injury, liver damage, and — in a smaller, more exploratory body of work — brain-gut axis signaling and central nervous system models.

An Important Caveat on Evidence Quality

Nearly all published BPC-157 research to date consists of animal (primarily rodent) studies, using local, intraperitoneal, or intragastric administration at very low doses. No large-scale, placebo-controlled human clinical trials for BPC-157 have been completed and published. This is a meaningfully different evidence position than compounds like semaglutide or tirzepatide, which have extensive human trial data behind them — a distinction worth keeping in mind when evaluating any claims about this compound relative to its research maturity.

Why It Remains a Compound of Research Interest

BPC-157's apparent effect across multiple, otherwise unrelated organ systems and injury models — rather than a single narrow mechanism — is itself part of what has sustained ongoing preclinical investigation. Understanding whether this reflects one unifying mechanism or several distinct, overlapping ones remains an open and active research question.
